Unable to Read MICR Data with Excella Check Reader

When scanning a check through the check reader, MICR data may not be read for different reasons, one of these reasons could be because the check may not be valid but before jumping to that conclusion, it’s better to troubleshoot the device first by testing the same process with another check, if the issue is the same, we may need to troubleshoot the device to resolve this issue.  If another check is being read through the check reader than the issue might be with that check itself and you might want to be careful before cashing a check where the MICR data is not being read.

To troubleshoot the check reader device, try the following steps:

  1. Ensure there is not paper clip or leftover paper on the check reader path causing a jam or a bad scan.
  2. Make sure you test the scanning capability by opening the Demo Program on your desktop.  ***Ensure to close QuickCheck before opening this program.
  • When you open the Demo Program, look for the STX option
  • Scan the check by pressing Scan Check
  • Find out if the check is properly running and scanned
  • Find out if the check’s routing and account number are being read.
  • If there is a black line on the image, the sensor has gone bad and it needs further repair from the manufacturer if within five years of purchase.
  • If there is a completely black image, the motor has gone bad, repairs can get done through the manufacturer
  • If no image is being scanned, try reinstalling the drivers or contacting EmagineNET Support to reinstall the drivers; otherwise, get the drivers right from magtek.com
